What Are the Staples of Southern Cuisine?

Southern cooking is popular throughout the United States and the world. Originally from Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and other southern states, southern cooking includes a number of staple dishes.

Whether you want to cook southern cuisine for the first time or you’re hosting a Texas dinner party, here are the staples of all good southern cooking meals:

-Pan-fried chicken: Pan-fried chicken is generally the first thing that comes to mind when people think of southern cuisine. Pan-fried chicken is breaded with special herbs and spices to give it a unique flavor. While KFC may claim to have the world’s best fried chicken recipe, you don’t have to look far to find someone with superior fried chicken recipes that have been passed through the family for generations.

-Chicken fried steak: Take a juicy cutlet, bread it, and fry it, and you have chicken fried steak. Often considered one of the best southern cuisine dishes available, chicken fried steak is popular wherever southern cuisine is served.

-Field peas: Field peas include black-eyed peas, sometimes served with rice or other types of peas and beans. Grits, which is ground corn, can also be considered a staple.

-Greens: Greens include collard greens, turnip greens, poke salad, mustard greens, and basic green salads.

-Potatoes: Mashed potatoes are a staple dish for southern cuisine, although various sweet potato dishes (like sweet potato pie) are also popular.

-Biscuits: Biscuits are usually served with honey as a side dish in traditional southern cuisine.

-Pies: Pies are the staple dessert of all southern cuisine dishes. Fruit pies like blackberry, peach, or apple pies are popular, as are more unique pies like sweet potato, chess, and shoofly.

-Fish: Catfish is a staple dish of southern cuisine. Most catfish dishes involve pan-frying and breading the fish, giving it a crunchy and flavorful outside texture and a juicy inside texture.

Specific regions also have different types of southern cuisine. In Southern Louisiana, for example, Cajun and Creole cuisine is particularly popular. In many ways, this cuisine is similar to traditional southern cooking, although the use of hot sauces, peppers, and crawfish is more prevalent.

Meanwhile, Texas southern cuisine may add barbeque sauce to traditional recipes to give it an added tangy flavoring. And in South Carolina, the popularity of rice crops led to the inclusion of rice in many staple southern cuisine dishes.

No matter where you go in the southern United States, you’ll find plenty of places to eat delicious southern cuisine dishes. With fried chicken, chicken fried steak, and mashed potatoes on the menu, it’s easy for stomachs all over the world to appreciate southern cooking.
